St. Charles Lwanga was a Ugandan convert to Christianity. He is one of twenty-two Ugandan martyrs who were killed in defense of their faith in the mid- to late 1880s.
I took this photo at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo, Diocese of Kampala. At the Shrine in Jan. 2007, I had the blessed & humbling opportunity to celebrate a Mass at the altar which—if I recall correctly—is placed where St. Charles gave his life in martyrdom. For more info, visit
